Carrier review
Aflac Medicare Supplement
We are appointed to represent Aflac. This page explains what the company actually is, what it is good at, and what to check before you buy — not what its brochure says.
Figures reviewed for 2026
- Parent company
- Aflac Incorporated, Columbus, Georgia
- Market
- Medigap in selected states, not nationwide
- Also known for
- Worksite and supplemental health products
Aflac is best known for the supplemental policies sold at work, and its Medicare Supplement line is a smaller, state-by-state business that has been in and out of the market over the years. It is back in a number of states now, usually with household discounts and standard plan letters. The brand recognition is real, but Aflac's Medigap pricing is not automatically competitive just because the name is familiar, and its availability is genuinely limited by state.
Why consider Aflac
- A very recognizable brand, which some clients find easier to trust than a regional carrier they have never heard of.
- Household discounts in most states where the product is offered.
- A large, well-capitalized parent behind the policy.
What to check first
- Aflac sells many products that are not Medigap. Make sure the policy being discussed is a Medicare Supplement, not a hospital indemnity or cancer policy that pays fixed amounts.
- Medigap availability and plan letters vary by state, and the line has been withdrawn and reintroduced before, so confirm current filings.
- Ask for the increase history on the specific Medigap block you would enter. The parent's size says nothing about how that block has priced.
How we compare this carrier against the rest
Medigap benefits are standardized by federal law, so a Plan G from Aflac covers exactly what a Plan G from any other carrier covers. That leaves five things worth comparing, and we check all five before making a recommendation:
- The filed premium at your age, ZIP code, and tobacco status
- The last five years of rate increases on the exact plan and block
- Whether pricing is attained-age, issue-age, or community-rated
- Household, spousal, and multi-policy discounts you qualify for
- The issuing legal entity, since one brand can hold several blocks
Common questions
Before you apply
- Is this carrier cheaper than the others?
- Sometimes, and only for a specific age, ZIP code, tobacco status, and household. Medigap benefits are identical by plan letter, so price is the only real variable — which is why we quote the whole market rather than publishing a number that goes stale.
- Can I be turned down for health reasons?
- Outside your six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period, and outside any state-specific rights such as a birthday rule, yes. Carriers use medical underwriting and can decline or rate you up.
- What happens to my rate over time?
- The carrier files increases with your state insurance department, and they apply to your whole block of business. A carrier with a history of double-digit annual increases is expensive even when the first year looks cheap.
