Central States Idemnity is a private life and casualty insurance agency that is part of the Berkshire Hathaway group of companies. It is headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska. In 1992, the company was acquired by the Warren Buffet-owned corporation and has since enjoyed a rating of AA from Standard & Poor’s.
AM Best also gave it a financial strength rating of A+ (Superior) and a long-term issuer credit rating of aa- as of September 2019. This means that the company has a strong balance sheet and has an adequate operating performance.
Prior to being absorbed by Berkshire Hathaway, CSI operated as Central States Health & Life Co. of Omaha, which was founded in 1932. CSI per se was created in 1977 to provide involuntary unemployment insurance and other casualty-related coverage products. The bulk of CSI’s work is focused on property, casualty/accident and health insurance. However, it is also known for its medicare supplement products (also known as Medigap).
CSI is licensed in all 50 states and U.S. territories. Its subsidiary, CSI Life Insurance Company is licensed in all states except in New York and New Hampshire.
Medicare Supplement, also called Medigap, is an expansion product to the federal government’s original Medicare product, which aims to provide healthcare assistance to all its citizens ages 65 years and up (including those under 65 but with certain disabilities).
Unlike Medicare, which wholly government provided, Medigap is sold through private insurance agencies. The benefits included in each of the 10 Medicare Supplement policies available are the same across the country and regardless of the provider. Their rates will likely differ depending on the location and who is selling them, but the government guarantees that all basic inclusions will remain the same wherever you are.
In addition, private agencies are allowed to choose not to carry all of the 10 policies under their wing and sell only those that are in high demand. That said, if you are interested in a specific type of plan, shop around first if there’s any agency in your area offering it and then compare rates and extra inclusions.
However, there are certain rules that insurance companies must follow when it comes to Medigap plan distribution. First, all of them are required to sell Plan A. If they do decide to sell any other policy, they are also required to offer Plan C or Plan F to those who are not new to Medigap, and either Plan D or Plan G to those who are first time Medigap subscribers.
Starting January 1, 2020, you must also note that policies that include the Part B deductible as a benefit will no longer be sold to new enrollees. These include Plan C and Plan F. If you already have either before the said date, you may continue to use it and will not be required to let it go.
As mentioned, the benefits of a Medicare Supplement are the same across the country, and the difference will reflect on the level of coverage available and their pricing. The base benefits of a Medigap plan are as follows:
As of 2019, the high deductible version of Medigap Plan F can cover up to the deductible amount of $2,300 before the policy starts paying anything. The Part B deductible for the year is at $185.
Central States Idemnity has a dedicated team for those interested in its Medigap policies. According to its website, it does not require medical exams or blood work to qualify for any of its plans on offer. It also provides a hassle-free claims processing services, with an automatic filing system that will not have to trouble you with any paperwork.
The most ideal time to apply for any Medicare Supplement plan is during your Open Enrollment Period. This is the six-month window given to those who are first eligible for Medicare. Within this time, you can choose any of the Medigap plans that you want and not have to worry about being rejected because of a past or current health condition. No insurance provider can also charge you a higher fee that what it typically charges to buyers that are generally healthy.
This six-month period starts on the first day of the month that you celebrate turning 65 years old. Thus, if you become 65 on April 15, then your Open Enrollment Period starts April 1 and ends six months after.
We cannot stress enough how important an OEP is because it gives you the liberty to choose the Medigap plan that you want out of the 10. If you miss this window, then you run the risk of being declined or given a higher monthly bill (and the government will not be able to help you dispute it).
