Heartland National is a fairly young company, having been established only in 1994. However, it has grown exponentially and rapidly throughout its 25 years in the insurance industry. The business had pretty humble beginnings. It was created by former insurance agent Chris McDaniel and initially operated as an agency out of an extra bedroom in his house, until it eventually expanded and made enough revenue to move into a much larger office in 1996.
As it grew, Heartland National added 6,000 new sales associates to its payroll with the acquisition of Successful Sales Systems, which was followed by its takeover of Dixie National Life, which had operations in several states. In 2008, the company entered into an agreement with Equitable Life and Casualty Insurance for the administration and reinsurance of its policies.
At present, Heartland National Life shares a spot with Heartland Properties of Missouri and Heartland Financial Group under the banner trade name Heartland Holding Company. Heartland National, specifically, focuses on the senior citizen demographic, offering a range of insurance products that include Medicare Supplements (Medigap), cancer care, and hospital care.
Heartland National is headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah but it provides coverage in all 50 states. This is regardless where you live or where your policy was purchased. Based on reviews online, Heartland National offers satisfactory services with plans that are said to be affordable, easy to sell (with generous commissions), and have a quick claim system that is usually paid within 5 days from the date of application. As of this writing, it does not have a BBB accreditation but it has been given an A+ rating. AM Best also gave it an A. It is currently led by Dennis Taylor as president and chief executive officer.
Of the 10 Medigap plans regulated by the federal government, Heartland National offers four: Plan A, Plan F, Plan G and Plan N, all of which are available to new enrollees and those switching policies. It reportedly has a simplified medical underwriting process involving only Yes or No questions and all plans are guaranteed renewable with unlimited lifetime benefits. Its Medigap plans can also be expanded to include other supplemental benefits, such as life, dental, short term care, and cancer, heart attack and stroke.
Medicare Supplements are government-standardized, which means that their coverage is the same wherever you are in the United States and regardless of the insurance provider that you purchased them from. However, agencies may include additional benefits for an extra fee. Their monthly premiums also vary depending on the location, the insurance provider, and the product itself.
Generally, Medigap plans cover the following benefits:
– Medicare Part A coinsurance and hospital costs
– Medicare Part B coinsurance or copayment
– Part A hospice care copayment or coinsurance
– Part A deductible ($1,364 in 2019)
– Part B deductible ($185 in 2019)
– Part B excess charges
– Blood (first three pints)
– Skilled nursing facility care coinsurance
– Foreign travel emergency costs (up the plan’s limits)
Medicare and Medicare Supplement plans DO NOT cover the following:
– long term care (as with a nursing home)
– private duty nursing
– vision care
– dental care
– eyeglasses, and
– hearing aids
If you are turning 65 years old soon, it is best that you enroll in a Medigap plan during your Open Enrollment Period (OEP). This is the six months given to new enrollees during which you can apply for any plan you want and get approval, even without any medical assessment prior to purchase. It begins on the first day of the month you celebrate your 65th birthday. For example, if you are turning 65 in April 25, then your OEP starts April 1 and will end six months after.
It cannot be emphasized enough that you obtain your Medigap plan during this period to avoid any inconvenience during your application. If you miss your OEP, there is no guarantee that your application will be approved. If it is, insurance companies will not be prevented from charging you a higher monthly premium after conducting medical underwriting protocols.
