Medicare is America’s version of health insurance for elderly people, once they reach the age of 65. Elderly people not yet 65 but with eligible disabilities or a qualifying medical issue, such as End-Stage Renal Disease (Kidney Disease) may also be eligible. There are four Parts to Medicare, labeled as: Part A for Hospital coverage, Part B for Medical coverage, Part C for Medicare Advantage coverage and Part D for Prescription Drug coverage.
Medicare Parts A (hospital) and Medicare Part B (medical) are considered to be “Original Medicare”. Part A and Part B provide predetermined/fixed amount benefits, to include many preventive services.
Medicare Part A includes benefits for care of an in-patient nature provided in the hospital or skilled nursing home, in-home care and care for the terminally ill provide by licensed hospice.
Learn MoreMedicare Part B covers care provided by a physician, treatment in an outpatient facility, necessary medical supplies, Medicare approved medical equipment and some preventative care.
Learn MoreAn individual approved insurance company can offer coverage choices over and above Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B, including Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C) , Prescription Coverage (Part D), Medicare Supplement Plans (Medigap), and Medicare Cost Plans. Private insurance programs may provide coverage’s Original Medicare doesn’t offer and reduce your healthcare costs. Your specific health conditions, financial condition and lifestyle choices are things which should be taken into consideration when researching other Medicare coverage choices and you must take into consideration the restricted networks of most of the programs offered outside of the Original Medicare Program.
Medicare Part C Advantage plans are different from the Original Medicare program. Advantage Plans provide both Medicare Parts A and B benefits and often provide extra benefits, like preventative programs such as dental and vision. You must be enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan and you can only select from plans approved in your area.
Medicare provides optional prescription drug coverage through private Medicare Part D Plans. Medicare Advantage plans can offer Part D benefits or, if your benefits are provided through Original Medicare, you can decide to purchase a stand alone Prescription Drug plan through a private insurance company being offered in your state.
Medicare Supplement Plans (Medigap) are regulated by both state and federal laws and are intended for people who have Medicare benefits through the Original Medicare program. A Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan provides coverage for your Medicare Part A and Part B deductibles, co-payments and other gaps in the Original Medicare for approved Part A and Part B services.
Medicare Cost Plans are similar in many ways to Medicare Advantage plans in that they include coverage for Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B benefits and usually offer additional coverage. The primary difference being that Medicare Cost Plans are restricted to a very specific, smaller geography. Very few companies currently offer Medicare Cost Plans.
