If you are an American over the age of 65, chances are you need a Medicare Supplement Plan.
A Medicare Supplement Plan, also referred to as Medigap Insurance, takes care of any unforeseen medical costs that fall outside the bounds of Medicare.
In case you are unfamiliar with it, Medicare is the Federal government issued health insurance plan for seniors and people with disabilities, administered by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS).
When ill-health or accident strikes, you want to know that you are covered for any medical treatment you may need.
A Medicare Supplement Plan transforms your Medicare coverage from adequate to outstanding. By picking up from where Medicare leaves off, supplemental plans allow you to rest easy, knowing that you have already budgeted for any medical issues that may arise in your future.
To be eligible for a supplement plan, you need to be enrolled in:
[For further information about how to sign up for Medicare, follow this link to the official government website. When you’re done there, pop back here for the next steps.]
Let’s take a closer look at how the figures add up.
Broadly speaking, in exchange for annual Part A and B deductibles, Medicare Plans cover:
Medicare Supplement Plans cover:
Some of the items covered by a supplement plan include:
By adding supplemental insurance, you will not be left guessing when it comes to your medical expenses. You know what you have to budget every month to keep your health —and your finances—in good shape.
Before we introduce you to the different types of Medicare Supplement Plans available to you, here are a few things you need to know about how Medigap Insurance works.
In order to protect you as the consumer, laws are in place on both a state and federal level to regulate Medicare Supplement Insurance. All companies that offer these products are selling the same standardized plans. This is an important deciding factor when it comes to choosing which company to go with. Paying more money for your plan has no bearing on the quality of that plan.
The approved Medicare Supplement plans are labeled A to N. Each plan offers a different combinations of benefits. We will look at this in more detail in a moment to help you decide which is the most appropriate for you.
While the plans are standardized, there is flexibility when it comes to deciding on which doctor to use. Your body, your choice of hospital or doctor. Whether this means going to your favorite family doctor or choosing the hospital closest to your home, the plans allow you to be in charge of your health.
Provided you keep up with your premium payments, you do not have to worry about suddenly not being eligible for coverage. If you keep up with your side of the bargain, your plan has to keep up with theirs.
If you have your sights set on spending your retirement traveling the world, or plan on visiting your children on the opposite side of the planet, you’ll be pleased to know that certain supplement plans include travel health insurance. Be cautious when selecting your plan though, as this is not the case for all options.
If you need to see a specialist urgently, you do not have to waste time getting a referral from your family doctor. Provided the facility or doctor accepts Medicare, you will be able to attend to your medical needs without a major runaround.
Next step—what benefits are offered by the various Medigap plans?
Each Medigap plan offers a combination of benefits within 9 major areas of coverage. Medigap F offers the most comprehensive plan, covering all 9 benefits, while others are more scant in their offerings.
Let’s have a more detailed look at the definition of each benefit type before we examine how they fit into each plan.
To understand Part A Coinsurance, it’s important to understand what Medicare Part A includes.
Medicare Part A deals with hospitalization, and has a deductible of $1340 (in 2018).
It covers:
Medicare Part A Coinsurance will step in to cover the additional amounts mentioned above that are not covered by Medicare Part A.
As with Part A, it is important to understand what Medicare covers in order to see where supplemental coverage needs to step in.
Medicare Part B cover 80% of the cost of in and outpatient medical treatment, ranging from doctors’ visits, to diagnostic testing, to medical supplies and equipment, to speech and physical therapy. It has a deductible of $183 (2018).
Medicare Part B Coinsurance covers the additional 20%.

It is unlikely that you will need to take advantage of this benefit as the blood bank generally supplies blood free of charge. When there is a charge, however, all Medigap Plans will cover it.
All Medicare Supplement plans cover hospice-related expenses not covered by Medicare. These include:
Medicare covers the following expenses for skilled nursing facility care:
Medicare no longer offers coverage after day 100.
Certain Medigap plans will pay all or some of the the coinsurance amount up to the 101st day.
Certain Medicare Supplement plans cover all or some of the Medicare Part A Deductible of $1340 per benefit period.
Medigap Plans C and F pay for the Medicare Part B deductible of $183 in full.
Medigap Plans F and G pay for approved excessive charges under Medicare Part B.
6 out of the 10 standardized plans cover emergency health care outside of the United States, provided the care starts within 60 days of leaving the country. If this is needed, you will need to pay a $250 deductible plus 20% coinsurance. There is a maximum lifetime benefit of $50,000.
Onto the next phase—choosing the Medicare Supplement Plan that will work best for you.
