Shenandoah Life is a member company of the Prosperity Life Group and has been in the insurance business for 90 years. Its other co-subsidiaries are S.USA Life Insurance Company and SBLI USA Life Insurance Company. Not all Prosperity Life products are available in all states, so it’s best to check with the firm’s network which ones are provided in your area. Shenandoah Life, in particular, is licensed in 31 states and in the District of Columbia.
In 2017, Prosperity received an A- (Excellent) rating from A.M. Best and logs more than $15 billion of life insurance for over 300,000 policies. It also listed $2.5 billion in assets as of the said year.
Shenandoah Life offers seven of the 10 Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans standardized by the U.S. federal government.: A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. Take note that all Medigap policies are the same regardless of your location and your insurance provider, as the government’s way of safeguarding its senior citizens. While Original Medicare generally suffices, there are out-of-pocket costs that come with aging that necessitates acquiring a Medicare Supplement. The type of Medigap plan you purchase depends largely on your current health status, financial status, and health forecast. The prices for the Medigap policies vary depending on how comprehensive their coverages are.
Shenandoah Medigap policies are guaranteed renewable and, as with any other Medigap plan offered in other companies, designed to cover one person only. This means that if you are married, your spouse should purchase a separate policy. You can also choose to have the benefits paid to you, or directly to your doctor or your hospital. The benefits begin on the first day that you are confined to a hospital and end when you are no longer in a facility for 60 consecutive days.
Not all of your healthcare needs are covered by Medicare and Medigap. Such out-of-pocket expenses not included are dental care, vision, private duty nursing, long-term care, and hearing aids. You can speak to certified insurance agents for Shenandoah Life to find out more about its suite of products if you want to expand your current plan.
The best time to apply for any of Medigap plans is during your Open Enrollment period. This starts on the first day of the month that you celebrate your 65th birthday and closes six months after. That said, if you turn 65 years old in April 25, Open Enrollment begins on April 1 and ends October 1.
Note that as per federal law, insurance providers are required to approve your application regardless of your existing health status. If you fail to purchase Medigap during this period, you might not be able to buy or you could be charged with a higher monthly premium. This is why it’s important to make note of your schedule so you can get any Medigap plan without being subjected to medical underwriting. It’s best that you speak with your trusted Medicare Supplement advisor before signing up to optimize your benefits.
