Medicare Advantage Plans in Texas

Texas has one of the largest Advantage markets in the country, and it is genuinely different by region: Houston and Dallas offer dozens of plans, the Rio Grande Valley is dominated by dual-eligible special needs plans, and west Texas has counties with almost no choice. There is no such thing as a Texas answer.

What matters

What Medicare Advantage looks like in Texas

Humana, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Wellpoint, Superior HealthPlan, Molina, Baylor Scott & White Health Plan and Devoted Health all sell, alongside a dense field of special needs plans in the big metros. Harris, Dallas, Tarrant, Bexar and Hidalgo counties are saturated; rural west Texas counties often have two options or fewer.

What an Advantage plan costs in Texas

Zero-premium plans with drug coverage, dental and an over-the-counter allowance are standard in the metros, and many add transportation and fitness benefits. The cost of a plan here is rarely the premium; it is the specialist you can no longer see without a referral or a drive.

The rules that matter in Texas

Texas allows medical underwriting on Medigap after the six-month open enrollment period and prices on attained age, so the return path to a supplement narrows with time and health. The state’s plan service areas are filed by county, which is why a plan advertised in Houston may not exist in Amarillo.

Where to check before you enroll in Texas

The Texas HICAP program, reached through your local Area Agency on Aging, provides free counseling, and the Texas Department of Insurance regulates the plans and publishes complaint data.
