Medicare Advantage Plans in Virginia

Virginia’s Advantage market is really three markets: Northern Virginia, where plans compete block by block; Richmond and Hampton Roads, where Sentara anchors the field; and the rural west and south, where options are few. The state’s geography makes the county question unusually important.

What matters

What Medicare Advantage looks like in Virginia

Anthem, UnitedHealthcare, Humana, Sentara Health Plans and Kaiser Permanente in the north are the main presence, with Optima Health in the Tidewater region. Fairfax, Prince William, Henrico and Virginia Beach have the widest choice; Highland, Bath and Bland counties have almost none.

What an Advantage plan costs in Virginia

A $0 premium is easy to find in Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads, usually with drug coverage included. In the rural counties, the low premium is often paired with a narrow network built around a single regional hospital.

The rules that matter in Virginia

Virginia permits underwriting on Medigap after the six-month window and uses attained-age pricing, so the supplement is cheapest at 65. Advantage plan benefits and networks can change each January, and the January to March window allows one change for anyone who wants to reverse course.

Where to check before you enroll in Virginia

VICAP, the Virginia Insurance Counseling and Assistance Program, is the state’s SHIP and counsels residents for free, while the State Corporation Commission’s Bureau of Insurance regulates the plans.
