Medicare Advantage Plans in Alaska

Alaska has the smallest Advantage market in the country, and in most of its boroughs there is nothing to enroll in. Anchorage and the Matanuska-Susitna area have a plan or two; the Bush, the Aleutians and much of the interior have none, and care is arranged through Original Medicare plus a supplement.

What matters

What Medicare Advantage looks like in Alaska

Premera Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alaska writes the best-known option, with limited presence from national carriers in the Anchorage area. Fairbanks, Juneau and the smaller boroughs typically see no Advantage plans at all, which makes the supplement decision the only real decision.

What an Advantage plan costs in Alaska

Where plans exist, premiums are usually $0 to $50, and drug coverage is included. In the boroughs with no plan, Original Medicare plus a Medigap policy and a Part D plan is the standard route, and the Medigap policy’s coverage during travel outside Alaska becomes the deciding feature.

The rules that matter in Alaska

Alaska allows medical underwriting on Medigap after the six-month open enrollment period and prices on attained age. Given how few Advantage plans are sold here, a resident should confirm year by year whether a plan still serves their borough before assuming continuity.

Where to check before you enroll in Alaska

The Alaska Medicare Information Office, the state’s SHIP program, provides free counseling, and the Alaska Division of Insurance regulates the plans and handles complaints.
